Your looking at the food and thinking sure, it all looks great to me but there is no way my child will eat gut healing foods . Picky eating is one of the biggest hurdle’s parents face when thinking about changing diet to a gut healing approach. In fact, it might be the biggest, a total non-starter. How are you supposed to get your child eating in a way that supports their health when the only things they will touch are bread and sweets and perhaps the occasional piece of cheese pizza?!
It seems impossible but don’t click away defeated just yet! I have worked with some really tough picky eaters in my career and I can tell you, it can be done. In fact parents are often blown away at the food their child will begin to accept with a little time and perseverance. I won’t tell you it will be a cake walk, but you can do it.
First, when there is major imbalance in the microflora of the gut, food cravings for simple carbohydrates and sugars are honestly beyond your child’s control. It is literally the gut bugs driving the bus. They send signals that can cause cravings for these foods, sometimes at the exclusion of all else. Why? Because they are smart little critters and these are the foods that help them thrive while pushing out the more beneficial bacteria that need fiber and good fats!
So, when we look at it through this lens your child needs your intervention! When we remove the foods that are feeding the bad bugs it gives your child’s gut a chance to find better microflora balance. Then the good guys can start sending signals to eat the foods that help them thrive. It happens. I’ve seen it many times. The first week or two can be tough going but with time and patience your child will come around. I’m not promising they are going to embrace every single meal you put on the table, but they will become a more open eater.
